HackDefy- A Hackathon during Quarantine

March 1, 2021

The coronavirus has halted sports seasons, school events, and summer camps. Codefy is trying to help students interested in computer science gain a meaningful experience by hosting a new hackathon. HackDefy, an online hackathon taking place from August 14th-16th, is open to all students who are aged 13-18. It is geared towards curing the coronavirus and supporting movements like Black Lives Matter by encouraging projects that aim to solve these issues using computer science. Students can learn something new and create a product that they believe will be beneficial to society, such as creating an app or website.

The in-person hackathon originally scheduled by Codefy could not take place due to coronavirus. The organization created a new online version that allows students to participate while staying home, thus limiting their risk from the virus.

The hackathon allows students nationally to participate and computer science knowledge is encouraged but not necessary. All students need is an electronic device. This is a great opportunity for students to expand their coding skills, and connect with other students and professionals online.

In addition to the actual hackathon, HackDefy will have an internship fair, a Git+Github workshop, Women in Tech panel, and several meet and greet events. These events have been included to encourage student participation in STEM fields, and to facilitate learning even during quarantine.

Many of our students at Codefy will participate in HackDefy, and we hope that others will join as well! The experiences offered through the event will be very helpful for students interested in pursuing computer science as their career. If you are interested, be sure to sign up!

The Wrong Approach to a Programming Project

The most difficult part of a good programming project is coming up with a good idea in the first place. Why? Because millions of people know how to code and some of them are very good at it, and there are countless ways to efficiently learn how to code but any tips for coming up with ideas are inevitably vague.

The History of Java and its Applications Today

Computer Science originated with the birth of the first electronic computer in the 1940’s. Prominent coding languages like Java did not exist at the time, requiring programmers to code in Binary or other complex languages such as UNIVAC Short Code.
